on Babies A, B & C

For those of you that restrict your news intake to just the mainstream media, you may be unaware of the ongoing trial of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, the late term Philadelphia abortionist. This trial began March 18th and until very recently, there was a virtual media blackout of coverage of all the gruesome details of what this monster did. But the intense scrutiny by both conservative bloggers and Twitter have forced even the most liberal news outlets to finally take notice.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell, aged 72, ran an abortion clinic in Philadelphia for 20 years. It was raided in 2010 on charges of illegal prescription drug trafficking. It was then that officials noticed all of the other issues with the clinic. The facility was dirty, blood-stained, and unsterile, reeking of cat urine. According to the Grand Jury Report, investigators found nearly full term babies disposed of in bags and shoeboxes, some even kept in the doctor’s freezer. They also found that Gosnell kept jars of severed infants feet, as well as pictures of his patients’ genitalia.

Currently, Gosnell faces 5 (originally 8) counts of murder: 4 first degree counts of murder regarding the deaths of four babies born alive, and one third degree charge regarding the death of a patient: a 41 year old refugee from Bhutan name Karnamaya Mongar who was given a lethal overdoes of anesthesia and painkillers during a 2009 abortion. As the trial enters closing arguments this week, the horrific reality of what this doctor did forces us to face a reality that the pro-choice lobby would rather not discuss: abortion by definition involves the killing of babies.

If abortion is legal, then why is this doctor on trial for the murder of infants? The fact is that Gosnell’s specialty was late term abortions, where he induced labor at the point where babies born this early could survive if they received appropriate medical care.  Unfortunately, since these babies were not wanted by their mothers, either Gosnell or members of his staff, ended their life by inserting a scissors in the back of the infants head, and severed the child’s spinal cord in a process he called “snipping”. The Grand Jury report gives several examples of this, starting with Baby Boy A: “His 17-year-old mother was almost 30 weeks pregnant – seven and a half months – when labor was induced. An employee estimated his birth weight as approaching six pounds. He was breathing and moving when Dr. Gosnell severed his spine and put the body in a plastic shoebox for disposal. The doctor joked that this baby was so big he could ‘walk me to the bus stop.’ Another, Baby Boy B, whose body was found at the clinic frozen in a one-gallon spring-water bottle, was at least 28 weeks of gestational age when he was killed. An Baby C was moving and breathing for 20 minutes before an assistant came in and cut the spinal cord, just the way she had seen Gosnell do it so many times.”

These are only a few of the gruesome details of what this real life Hannibal Lecter did at this clinic, which was shut down initially because of the drug trafficking, not because of the danger he posed to women and babies. Unfortunately, you would be surprised to know that abortion clinics are not regulated like other medical clinics. In fact, in 1993, the Pennsylvania Department of Health bowed to pro-choice political pressure to completely stop all oversight of abortion clinics.  As noted in the Grand Jury Report,  “with the change of administration from Governor Casey to Governor Ridge, officials concluded that inspections would be ‘putting a barrier up to women’ seeking abortions.” So instead of protecting women, it seems the pro-choice lobby seemed only interested in protecting the abortion industry. You have to wonder, what is it about abortion that it makes it so important that you would risk women’s health in such a fashion, even to the point of ignoring infanticide? You also have to wonder how anyone can still argue that these breathing, squirming babies are not just that, not only based on  what science tells us but what you see with your own eyes?

If you want to read the full Grand Jury Report, you can see it here: http://www.phila.gov/districtattorney/pdfs/grandjurywomensmedical.pdf . But I warn you, the details of what he did are graphic, with pictures too horrific to even be posted here. If you are a supporter of life, it will turn your stomach. And if you are a supporter of abortion, it may cause you to start to question that belief. But, if you are too afraid, then I suppose you could always decide to do what the media has done, and just ignore the truth of what happened to these women and to Babies A, B, and C, right?
